Why do students need Emergency Kits?

In a lockdown situation, our staff/students may be required to remain in their classrooms for several hours.  To prepare for this situation each classroom contains a rolling cart that stores emergency food, water, and basic first aid supplies.   At the beginning of every school year, families are asked to provide a kit for each student to be stored in the classroom.  Classroom Emergency Kits contain water and food bars, but are only accessible when staff/students are not allowed to leave the building.

The Smith PTSA Emergency Prep Chairs support the school and staff in preparing for emergencies and disasters.  This year, the Smith PTSA has again coordinated with a local company, PrepareSmart, to provide basic kits for just $6.00! Packs will be labeled and delivered to your student’s classroom and stored with other classroom emergency supplies.  Packs will be sent home with students at the end of the school year and can be reused for 5 years.

Parents are still encouraged to send in a personal note or photo to accompany the pack.

Each kit contains:
1 - Solar emergency blanket
1 - 12 hour light stick
2 – 4 oz. water pouch (5 year shelf life) more info
1 – hand warmer pair
1 – 400 calorie food bar (5 year shelf life)* more info

*Please check the ingredients of the food bar, as it may not be suitable for all students. In this case, families will need to provide items that meet their student’s dietary needs.
